The Number One Secret to Get Subscribers (Hint: It’s Not What You Think)

Size may not always matter, but when it comes to your email list, bigger is usually better – especially when your subscribers are the right subscribers: people who are interested in what you are up to. Otherwise, who will buy your programs and services? Your social media fans are great, but it’s not likely they will be a majority of your paying clients.

It’s imperative for long term business success that you build a list of email subscribers – people who are enthusiastically raising their hands to be the first to know what’s happening with you and your biz… People who want to be certain that they don’t miss an update from you.

So, exactly how do you grow your list? And, how do you make sure that the people who sign up are the right people for your business?

The unconventional secret to build a healthy base of targeted subscribers comes down to one thing, and it’s not having the perfect opt-in.

Instead, it’s all about content.

The best way to attract people to your website is to start with creating amazing content on a regular basis – usually in the form of blog posts on your site and guest blogs on outside websites. Quality writing (or videos, podcasts, etc.) that is in your unique voice is what will draw the eyes and attention of your tribe – people who appreciate your viewpoint, your style, and who resonate with your message.

The two keys to remember when it comes to creating content & list-building are:

1) Regularity is important!

You need to demonstrate to your audience that you are consistent and reliable. Your weekly blog posts are just the ticket! To help you stay on track with content delivery, there are a number of tools to help you be consistent. One we love here at LKR is the Editorial Calendar WordPress Plug-in. When you get an idea for a blog post, instead of jotting it on a forgettable post-it or starting a draft post that is quickly misplaced, simply enter your post title and a few notes into the plugin’s calendar. Before you know it, your posts will be scheduled out for the next few months and all you’ll need to do is sit down a few days before the publishing date and finish up the content.

To ensure your success, schedule an hour or two of dedicated writing time each week in your calendar. Google calendar or iCal are great for this.

2) Share your content everywhere!

Social Media is among the best tools for attracting traffic to your website. Be sure to share your posts and guest posts far and wide on Social Media. To make the process even easier, automate delivery of your blog posts using Hootsuite.

And, don’t forget to schedule out your previous blog posts to be shared on social media again – recycle that content! It will be fresh for people who are new to your audience and your existing audience will appreciate reminders of all that fab content in your archives.
